Hahndorf's Fine Chocolates – Upper Ferntree Gully

It’s not every day you find a chocolate shop with a hidden backyard, a 150-year-old building, and homemade scones, but this one has it all. Whether you’re popping in for a quick coffee, stocking up on gifts, or indulging in a decadent dessert, Hahndorf’s Fine Chocolates offers more than just sweet treats, it’s a place full of stories, flavour, and community spirit.
From chocolate lover to business owner
It all began over 20 years ago, when Julie Hilton received a box of Hahndorf’s Fine Chocolates as a birthday gift. “They became my favourite chocolate immediately,” she recalls. Not long after, a Hahndorf’s Fine Chocolates store opened nearby. She and her kids became regulars, forming a friendly bond with the then-owners. A decade later, she found herself making an offer to buy the business, and she’s been at the helm for the past five years, recently signing on for another five years.
“I’ve always worked in customer service, but I dreamed of having something of my own. Now, I get to combine my love for chocolate, community, and great service, and I’m still loving what I do.”
Chocolates, scones & something extra
The café serves up couverture chocolate, known for its high cocoa butter content, giving it that smooth, melt-in-your-mouth richness chocolate lovers adore. The entire truffle range is gluten-free, and the menu also features light lunches, desserts, and a variety of scones baked fresh onsite by Julie herself." Our customers love the scones, they’re something a little extra and made with love. And with every drink, you get a complimentary chocolate, just as a sweet thank you.”
A feast for the eyes, and the soul
Step inside the store and you’re greeted with warm smiles, colourful displays of chocolates and hampers, and the scent of something sweet in the air. You can take a seat indoors, relax in the lush backyard (a hidden treasure many still don’t know exists!), or book the cosy private function room for a small gathering. “The vibe here is everything. I truly believe your vibe attracts your tribe, and I’m lucky to have a team that’s just as friendly and caring as our customers.”
A slice of local history
The café is housed in a 150-year-old building that’s been everything from a butcher to a bakery. “The history of this place adds to its charm,” Julie says. “It’s surrounded by beautiful trees and has this incredible atmosphere. There’s a real sense of community here.” With plans to give both the interior and exterior a fresh new look this year, the café continues to evolve, while staying true to its roots of good chocolate, warm service, and a welcoming space for all.
