Rainy Day Books – The Basin

Meryll's Story
Rainy Day Books is a testament to my lifelong love of books. I've been collecting and selling books for years, starting with mail-order catalogues and market stalls. But I knew that if I didn’t open my own bookshop, I’d regret it forever. This Christmas marks 18 years since I opened the doors of Rainy Day Books.
Shelf improvement
Rainy Day Books is a wonderfully busy space full of treasures. Customers are surprised that I can find anything, but there is a system! The store is organised into genres and subjects, including cosy crime novels, fiction, non-fiction and children's books. I also specialise in rare and collectable books dating from the 1700s onward.
Book smarts
Whatever the author or genre, people just want something good to read – and I’m here to help.
Let me know an author or book that you like, and I’ll recommend three similar reads you’re sure to enjoy.
I love the challenge of being a book detective too. A customer will say, ‘I want a book I had when I was a little girl; it was blue’, and because of my wide knowledge of books, I can find it. It’s so rewarding to help people rediscover their lost favourites.
A storybook ending
Visitors to Rainy Day Books love to admire the window displays and browse the shelves, often with their families and dogs in tow. On weekends, you'll regularly find kids happily sprawled out in the children's section reading. I also sell books online through AbeBooks, so you can enjoy Rainy Day Books no matter where you are in the world.
It's been a joy to create this haven for book lovers.
