Kelly Mini Sports – Boronia

For toddlers and preschoolers, sport isn’t about competition, it’s about confidence, coordination, and having fun. That’s exactly the philosophy behind Kelly Mini Sports, a vibrant early-years sports programme helping young children discover movement, teamwork, and self-belief from their very first kick, throw, or jump.
From professional sport to playground smiles
Kelly Mini Sports was founded in 2013 by Cameron Drake, alongside Jeff Fleming and Steve Martin, with one clear goal: to give young children a positive, high-energy introduction to sport.
Cameron brings professional experience from Melbourne Victory, combining elite sporting knowledge with a passion for early childhood development. Over the past decade, the Kelly Mini Sports team has transformed fitness into fun, helping children build confidence and coordination through play.
Their approach recognises that the earliest years are crucial for developing motor skills, social confidence, and a lifelong love of being active.
Play-based programs designed for little movers
Kelly Mini Sports specialises in age-specific programmes for children aged 1 to 5, affectionately known as their “little legends.” Sessions blend music and multi-sport activities into one big adventure.
While the kids are busy laughing and playing, they are also developing essential skills such as balance, coordination, teamwork, and listening, often without even realising it.
Family involvement is a key part of the experience. Parents and carers are encouraged to join in with the younger children, turning each session into a shared memory and strengthening bonds through active play.
High energy, supportive environment
Step into a Kelly Mini Sports session and you will immediately notice the upbeat atmosphere, big smiles, enthusiastic coaches, and a welcoming environment where every child can participate at their own pace.
Trained local coaches focus on creating a safe and encouraging space where children feel comfortable trying new things, building confidence alongside their physical skills.
Families particularly appreciate:
● Convenient class times across multiple venues
● Friendly, patient coaches
● A non-competitive environment
● The opportunity to trial sessions before committing
Families can experience the programme firsthand with two trials to see if it is the right fit for their child.
A proud part of the Knox community
Kelly Mini Sports has become a familiar presence across Knox, running classes at numerous venues throughout the area and surrounding neighbourhoods.
For the team, the greatest reward is watching children grow, starting as toddlers taking their first tentative steps into sport and later progressing into school or club activities with confidence.
But the impact extends beyond the children. Sessions often become social hubs where parents connect, friendships form, and support networks grow on the sidelines. “It’s about more than just the game,” the team says. “It’s about community, friendships, and those first best mates.”
Building skills for life
Beyond physical development, Kelly Mini Sports programmes also support school readiness. Through structured play, children learn social interaction, listening skills, following instructions, and confidence, all essential foundations for the classroom.
Looking ahead, the organisation plans to expand across Victoria, particularly in the growing western suburbs, with a goal of reaching 2,000 enrolled children.
Despite this growth, their mission remains the same: helping every child discover their confidence and joy in movement.
