Kingsland Chinese Restaurant – Boronia

Tucked along Boronia Road, Kingsland Chinese Restaurant has been a much-loved local institution for more than three decades. With its retro charm, family-friendly atmosphere, and authentic hospitality, Kingsland is more than just a place to eat, it’s a second home for generations of Knox locals.
A family story that spans generations
Kingsland’s story began in 1979, when Kevin first started working at the restaurant as chef and Bonnie as a waitress. In 1991, when the previous owners decided to sell, they seized the opportunity to take it over.
For their son Graham, the restaurant has been part of life since childhood. “I grew up here, helping out from the age of six,” he shares. “Even when I was working full-time in finance, I kept coming back to Kingsland. It’s in my blood. When I was made redundant, it felt right to carry on the family business.”
Today, Graham has stepped up as the second-generation owner, continuing the family’s legacy while his parents ease toward retirement.
What makes Kingsland special
Kingsland is one of the few remaining retro Chinese restaurants in Melbourne, and unlike many others, it has stayed within the family. The restaurant is truly a family affair, with parents, siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and even Graham’s own kids lending a hand.
Over the years, Kingsland has hosted everything from birthdays, weddings to elopements and even a funeral luncheon. The restaurant has also won multiple awards as Best Chinese in the Area from Menulog, and was even featured on the iconic Australian TV show Neighbours.
“The core values of our restaurant have garnered loyal customers over the years,” says Graham. “We continue being family friendly, humble, providing excellent customer service, as well as being competitively priced.”
Customers who become family
Stepping into Kingsland is like being welcomed into someone’s home. Regular customers are greeted by name, their “usual orders” remembered, and their favourite tables set aside when possible. “It’s the personal touch,” Graham explains. “These days you see a lot of QR code ordering and impersonal service. At Kingsland, we know our customers, and we love a bit of cheeky banter or a deep conversation when there’s time. "This down-to-earth approach has created a loyal customer base that spans generations.
Resilience and community spirit in Boronia
Located in Boronia, Kingsland continues to thrive in a suburb that is growing and evolving, with new families arriving while long-time locals remain. Graham describes Boronia as hardworking, honest, and welcoming, with a bit of larrikin spirit. That community spirit was especially evident in July 2025, when Kingsland was graffitied with racist slurs. What started as heartbreak turned into a powerful show of solidarity. Support poured in from locals, retro Chinese restaurant enthusiasts across social media, showing their support. “The love and camaraderie we felt from the community was overwhelming,” Graham says. “It reminded us why we do what we do.”
Looking ahead
While Kingsland doesn’t seek fame or viral trends, Graham hopes to see the restaurant receive the recognition it deserves. “We just want people to know we’re here, still serving, and still welcoming everyone,” he says. “Maybe one day we’ll even be featured in Good Food AU.” For now, the Tran family continues to run Kingsland with the same warmth and dedication they’ve shown for over 34 years.
