Owner Caleb Simpson started his barbering journey ten years ago, and at just 23, took the leap from cutting hair in his garage to opening a shop just around the corner from where he grew up.
“It was a tough time to start a business, but somehow we managed,” Caleb says, reflecting on those early days. “I was lucky to find a landlord who was willing to give me a go. "What started as a one-chair operation is now a thriving, three-barber business five years in, and growing strong.
A barbershop that feels like you belong
From the start, Caleb had a vision: to build a barbershop where everyone feels comfortable, especially the LGBTQIA+ community. "There just weren’t many queer-friendly barbershops in the southeast,” Caleb says. “I wanted to change that, for my friends, for myself, and for the community.”
That inclusive spirit shines through at Cheeky Barbers. Whether you're after a fresh fade, a classic cut, or a chill place to hang while you wait (hello, retro arcade games), it’s all about creating a place where people feel welcome.

“The feedback we hear most is that we actually take the time to do it right,” Caleb says.
“People also love the good vibes in the shop, good music, good chats, just an easy-going place to be.” Plus, with colourful comic books and classic games in the corner, even waiting for your appointment feels like part of the experience.
Rooted in Upper Ferntree Gully
For Caleb, being in Upper Ferntree Gully means more than just running a business. “I love seeing the greenery around the shop, it makes me feel closer to nature,” he says. “And it’s nice when people say hey when I’m out doing the groceries. It makes me feel like I’m part of something, not just a robot cutting hair.”
