The Drop In Cafe – Boronia

Alpa’s story ...
Fourteen years ago, while volunteering at the Australian Veteran's Op Shop, I saw a chance to create a small cafe. That humble idea blossomed into The Drop in Cafe, now located across from Boronia Mall – truly one of the best decisions I ever made.
Inspired by home
My childhood in Tanzania shaped my vision for The Drop In Cafe. I spent a lot of time visiting my grandmother on the weekends. Her household was bustling with activity, strong aromas of food, masala tea, and imbued with a warm sense of community and belonging. I felt it was important to convey that feeling in my business.
Giving old stories a new life
Visitors are captivated by our cafe’s special charm. It’s filled with second-hand treasures that have been given a new life – and stir up old memories and stories.
I’ve heard parents explaining how a rotary phone works to their children, and customers reminiscing about the past.
A menu that tells a story
Alongside tea, coffee, and delicious homemade cakes, we serve unique dishes like turmeric eggs with roti. I like to surprise customers with whimsy, such as milk in test tubes or whipped cream in egg cups. Our low-impact philosophy means we keep portions modest, following my grandmother’s wisdom: ‘Never eat until you're completely full’.
Heartfelt connections
Over the years, the cafe has become a special place where people feel safe, comfortable, and part of a community. The best compliment I receive is that the cafe feels like a happy home. That tells me I’ve met my goal.
The Drop In Cafe is a healing place, not just for me, but for everyone who walks through the door and enjoys their visit.
